Teknaf Forest Region Field Trip
Students of 8th semester of 2008-2009 sessions of Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, University of Chittagong are assigned to prepare a management plan for Teknaf forest region under Cox's Bazar South Forest Division. Special acknowledgement also made to Dr. Md Mosharraf Hossain to assist the working plan by providing funding from HEQEP. A survey was conducted from 16th April to 21th April, 2014 to identify the socio-economic condition around the homestead area of integrated forest management plan estate.
Teknaf is the southest upazilla of the southest district, Cox 's Bazar in Bangladesh, situated to the north–west and adjacent to the Myanmar. About 48 kilometer border lies between Teknaf Upazilla and Myanmar, divided by Naf River and hills. There are medium high hills and Naf River to the easter side and the Bay of Bangal to the west side of the Teknaf.
Total area of Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary (TWS) is 43,409.94 ha. Among these, 36574.19 ha is reserved forest and 6835.
75 ha is protected forest. There are two protected areas. One is Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary and the other is Himchari National Park.
There are 3 Ranges, 11 beats in Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary (TWS). The ranges are Teknaf, Hoaikong, and Shilkhali. There are 4, 4 and 3 beats in Teknaf, Hoaikong and Shilkhali respectively.
There are 536 species of plants in TWS. Among them trees- 150, Shrubs- 110, Herbs- 178, Climbers- 87, Epiphyte- 10, Parasite- 1 (Bangladesh J. Plant Taxon. 20(2):145-162,2013). There are also 198 species of Invertebrates, 48 species of Fishes, 27 species of Amphibians, 54 species of Reptiles, 243 species of Birds and 43 species of Mammals (IUCN 2013.IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.ver 2013.2).
The highest peak of Teknaf peninsula is 'Taingya' of about 200 meters in elevation. A natural cave named 'Kudum cave' is situated at Rhykheong beat, Hoaikong range under Teknaf Upazilla. Teknaf Nature Park (previously known as Teknaf Game Reserve), is the most attractive tourist spot in TWS. Other tourist spots of Teknaf Upazilla are Mathin Well, Second World War Bunker, hilly spring, seabeach, Jhau (Casuarina equisetifolia) plantation along the beach, scenic beauty of fishing in the Naf River and the Bay of Bengal, roaring of sea wave, Shilkhali Garjan sample plot having more than 150 years old trees.
